a) Defining relative clauses.
Ex1: The woman who/that lives next door is a journalist.
Ex2: A book which/that is very expensive has a lot of valuable information.
- Who/ that is used as a subject for people.
- Which/ that is used as a subject for things.
b) Non-defining relative clauses.
- These clauses give us more information about a person or thing already identified.
- When we write these clauses, we must use “comma (,)” at the beginning and at the end of the clauses.
These clauses are used in sentences containing:
+ proper name/noun (Ha Long Bay, John, Sirley…)
+ possessive adjectives (my, his, her, their, our, its)
+ demonstrative pronouns (this, that, these, those); etc..
- In non-defining relative clauses, we cannot use “that” and we cannot leave out “who” or “which”.
Ex : John, who (not “that”) speaks French and Italia, works as a tour guide.
