I. The passive voice: review (Câu bị động)
Example:
a. People speak English all over the world.
English is spoken all over the world.
b.Thousands of people visit the Temple of Literature .
The Temple of Literature is visited by thousands of people
 Form:
S + BE + Past participle (PP)...
1. Read the conversation in GETTING STARTED and underline any sentences in the passive voice that you can find. Check your findings with a partner.
1. Was anyone injured?
2. ...Only a few minor injuries were reported
3. ...Many houses and public buildings were destroyed ...
4. Thousands of people were left homeless.
5. ... who were trapped in flooded homes
7. They’ve been taken to a safe place

3. Rewrite the following sentences using the correct passive voice.

Short answers to Yes/No questions:

Ex: had you left when they came?

1. We use the past perfect to describe an action before a started time in the past
(Diễn tả một hành động trước 1 thời điểm nhất định trong quá khứ)

Ex: People had managed to leave the flooded villages by 11 o’clock.

After (Sau khi)
They went home after they had eaten a big roasted chicken.



By the time (Vào thời điểm)
He had cleaned the house by the time her mother came back.
