Lexical vs. Functional Words

Lexical/content words are nouns, verbs,
adjectives and adverbs which may be added
with affixes.
Ex: book > books > bookish, etc.
do > does > doer, etc.
Useful > usefully > usefulness
late > later
Functional/grammatical words are
conjunctions, prepositions, pronouns and
interjections which never have affixes.
Ex: You
and
under
wow
Nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs which
have no affixes are also called functional
words.
Ex: metro
should
antic
never
