Complex sentences
• A complex sentence consists of one independent clause and at
least one dependent clause.
They started eating as soon as their food arrived at the table.
• We use subordinating conjunctions (after, before, when, as
soon as, if, because, although, etc.) to connect the clauses in
a complex sentence.
We should take off our shoes when we enter someone's
house.

Complex sentences
• If the dependent clause comes first, we put a comma before
the independent clause.
After the party is over, each guest will receive a gift.
• If the independent clause comes first, we don't put a comma
before the dependent clause.
We should say 'thank you' when we receive a present.
