V. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your
answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the following questions.
Today we hear more and more about the importance of getting enough sleep.
Sleep can give energy to both our bodies and our brains. It can also affect our
feelings, behaviour, and memory.
Studies have shown that people in some countries spend less time sleeping and
more time working. But our bodies cannot work well without enough sleep.
Losing just one or two hours of sleep a night, over a long period of time, can
badly affect our health. We cannot work for many hours; we can get angry
easily; and we can even lose our IQ points. That explains why, without enough
sleep, an intelligent person may have difficulty doing daily tasks.
Studies have also shown that the time of year seems to affect how much sleep
we need. People usually sleep longer in the winter, sometimes as much as 14
hours a night. However, in the summer, they sometimes sleep as little as six
hours, without having any problems.

VII. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on
your answer sheet to indicate the correct answer to each of the
questions.
Grandparents are becoming the forgotten generation, with youngsters
now too busy to listen to their stories from the olden days.
A study of 1,000 five- to 18-year-olds reveals just 21 per cent will visit
their older relatives to hear about how their lives were different in the
past; such as where they worked, how it was living in the war, and how
they met the love of their life. More than half of youths have no idea
what job their grandparent did before retirement. Sadly, one in ten admit
they are simply not interested in their grandmother's or grandad's talents
and interests, and a quarter only turn up to see them for pocket money.
But 23 percent claim the reason they don't know anything about their
older relatives is that they don't really get the chance to talk properly.

Researchers found that although 65 per cent of youngsters do see their
grandparents every single week, 37 per cent claim this is only because
their parents want them to. And while 39 per cent talk to their
grandparents on the phone, Facebook or Skype at least once a week 16 per cent once a day - conversation is rarely focused on what they
are doing or have done in the past. Four in 10 kids have no idea what
their grandparent's proudest achievements are, while 30 per cent don't
know if they have any special skills or talents. And 42 per cent don't
spend any time talking about their grandparent's history - and are
therefore clueless about what their grandmother or grandad was like
when they were younger. Perhaps due to this lack of communication
and respect, just six per cent of children say they look up to their
grandparents as a role model and inspiration.

Question 23. Which of the following could be the main idea of the passage?
A. Young people's tendency to neglect their grandparents
B. Grandparents' loneliness in their old age
C. Grandparents' attitudes towards youngsters
D. Young people's disinterest in their grandparents' stories
Question 24. According to the study in paragraph 2, which information is NOT
true?
A. Nearby a quarter of young people don't have suitable opportunities to talk to
older relatives.
B. Over 50% of the young don't know about their older relatives' past
professions.
C. Most of youths visit their grandparents to ask for pocket money.
D. Merely one fifth of people in the survey keep asking about the bygone time
of their grandparents.

Question 25. According to the last paragraph, the proportion of the young voluntarily visiting
their older family members every week is _______.
A. 39%
B. 27%
C. 28%
D. 65%
Question 26. The word 'admit' in paragraph 2 is CLOSEST in meaning to ______.
A. dissent
B. refuse
C. conceal
D. confess
Question 27. The word 'them' in paragraph 2 refers to ______.
A. relatives
B. youngsters
C. talents
D. grandparents
Question 28. The phrase 'look up to' in paragraph 3 is OPPOSITE in meaning to?
A. dread
B. disrespect
C. imagine
D. admire
Question 29. Which of the following can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Youngsters nowadays are too indifferent to their grandparents' lives in the past.
B. Most young people use modern technology to keep in touch with their older generation.
C. Children's lack of communication with grandparents leads to mutual misunderstanding.
D. Grandchildren never care for their elderly relatives' special skills and talents.

Although playing video games is one of the most popular leisure
activities in the world, research into its effects on players, (30)_____,
is often trivialized.
One innovative application of video games in health care is (31)_____.
The degree of attention needed to play such a game can distract the
player from the sensation of pain, a strategy that has been reported and
evaluated among paediatric patients. (32)_____ a form of
physiotherapy or occupational therapy in many different groups of
people. Such games focus attention away from potential discomfort
and, unlike more traditional therapeutic activities, they do not rely on
passive movements and sometimes painful manipulation of the limbs.

However, there has been no long term follow-up and no robust randomised
controlled trials of such interventions. (33)_____. Furthermore, it is not known
whether any distracting effect depends simply on concentrating on an interactive
task or whether the content of games is also an important factor as there have
been no controlled trials (34)_____. Further research should examine factors
within games such as novelty, users' preferences, and relative levels of challenge
and should compare video games with other potentially distracting activities.
On balance, given that video game playing is highly prevalent among children
and adolescents in industrialized countries, (35)_____ moderate frequency of
play has serious acute adverse effects from moderate play. Adverse effects, when
they occur, tend to be relatively minor and temporary, resolving spontaneously
with decreased frequency of play. More evidence is needed on excessive play and

IX. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on
your answer sheet to indicate the correct answers to each of the
questions from 36 to 40.
Successful students often do the followings while studying. First, they
have an overview before reading. Next, they look for important
information and pay greater attention to it (which often needs
jumping forward or backward to process information). They also
relate important points to one another. Also, they activate and use
their prior knowledge. When they realize that their understanding is
not good, they do not wait to change strategies. Last, they can monitor
understanding and take action to correct or "fix up" mistakes in
comprehension.

Conversely, students with low academic achievement often demonstrate ineffective
study skills. They tend to assume a passive role, in learning and rely on others (e.g.,
teachers, parents) to monitor their studying, for example, low-achieving students often
do not monitor their understanding of content; they may not be aware of the purpose
of studying; and they show little evidence of looking back, or employing "fix-up"
strategies to fix understanding problems. Students who struggle with learning new
information seem to be unaware that they must extent effort beyond simply reading
the content to understand and remember it. Children with learning disabilities do not
plan and judge the quality of their studying. Their studying may be disorganized.
Students with learning problems face challenges with personal organization as well.
They often have difficulty keeping track of materials and assignments, following
directions, and completing work on time. Unlike good students who employ a variety
of study skills in a flexible yet purposeful manner, low-achieving students use a
restricted range of study skills. They cannot explain why good study strategies are
important for learning; and they tend to use the same, often ineffective study approach
for all learning tasks, ignoring task content, structure or difficulty.

Question 36. What is the topic of the passage?
A. Successful and low-academic achieving students
B. Effective and ineffective ways of learning
C. Study skills for high school students
D. Successful learners and their learning strategies
Question 37. The word "purpose" in the second paragraph is closest in
meaning to ______?
A. importance
B. aim
C. result
D. rule
Question 38. The underlined pronoun "They" in the last sentence refers to ___.
A. low-achieving students B. study skills C. good students D. study
strategies

Question 39. Which of the followings is NOT an evidence of monitoring
studying?
A. Monitoring their understanding of content B. Being aware of the purpose of
studying
C. Fixing up mistakes in understanding
D. Looking at their backs
Question 40. According to the passage, what can be learnt about passive
students?
A. They know the purpose of studying.
B. They monitor their understanding.
C. They are quick in their studying.
D. They depend on other people to organize their learning.
