Anh Ba rất giàu tình cảm. Một hôm,bạn anh là Nam thấy anh cầm
một tờ báo và chảy nước mắt. Anh Nam hỏi thì anh Ba đưa tờ báo và
giải thích: “Anh xem đây. Đây là tin tức về ông thị trưởng Coóc, một
nhà đại ái quốc Ái Nhĩ Lan. Ông ta bị bắt và bị người Anh bỏ tù. Ông
ta tuyệt thực. Không những ông không ăn uống mà còn không nói
năng, không cử động nữa. Ông nằm nghiêng một phía im lìm như thế
hơn bốn mươi ngày. Da thịt và áo quần phía ấy thối hết, và ông chết,
chết vì Tổ quốc. Can đảm biết bao! Dũng cảm biết bao! Một dân tộc
có những người như ông Coóc sẽ không bao giờ đầu hàng. Chúng ta
cũng có thể, chúng ta cũng có những người can đảm như ông thị
trưởng Coóc. Anh có biết chuyện cụ Tống Duy Tân không? Tôi kể anh
nghe: Cụ Tống Duy Tân là một nhà đại trí thức đã đấu trang dũng
cảm chống bọn xâm lược Pháp. Cụ bị bắt và bị nhốt trong một cái củi
để gửi đến Bộ Tổng tư lệnh Pháp. Ngồi trong củi, cụ vẫn làm thơ yêu
nước. Khi hết giấy, cụ bẻ gãy quản bút, lấy cật tre làm dao và mổ

Trong những tờ giấy tìm được trong cũi, cuối những bài thơ,
người ta còn thấy những dòng chữ: “Thà chết còn hơn đầu
hàng!”. Tôi tôn kính tất cả những người như Tống Duy Tân. Tôi
sùng kính tất cả những thị trưởng như ông Coóc. Cái chết của họ
làm cho Tổ quốc họ sống lạ, lòng can đảm của họ là bất diệt”.
