Lucky money
The custom of red envelopes for the New Year has existed since time immemorial, originating from China. Legend has it that a monster appeared on New Year`s Eve, preferring to pat the heads of children who were sleeping soundly, causing them to have a high or silly fever. As a result, families with young children have to stay up all night to prevent demons from harming their children.
Having a family over 50 years old gave birth to a son acne. That New Year, there were 8 fairies walking through the house knowing that this boy would be in trouble with youkai so he turned into 8 copper coins, his parents brought the package into a red piece of paper, placed next to the baby`s pillow. When the monster came, the money flashed causing the monster to panic and flee.
The story has been spread everywhere and since then, every New Year comes, people put money in a red envelope to give to children. Gradually it became a habit and maintained until now, people call it red packets at the beginning of the new year.
The meaning
of lucky money
Red envelopes bring a lot of deep and nice meaning. The red of the red envelope symbolizes the color of the mind, auspicious, prosperous throughout the year; is the color of hope and luck. The money in each red envelope is more or less considered a spiritual gift on the occasion of the new year, meaningful for a good and prosperous new year.
It can be said that lucky money is a beautiful and indispensable culture in the traditional Tet holiday of Vietnamese people.
