b. Practise reading aloud the following sentences:
There was a strong man on the street at night.
The strong man looked very strange.
He was holding an ice-cream in one hand, and a rubber doll in the other hand.
The man was eating the ice-cream, squeezing the doll and it was squeaking.
The man was screaming while walking to the square.
Nobody knew why he was doing the strange things.
Grammar:
Omission of relative pronouns
Combine the following sentences using relative pronouns.
Ex 1: The woman is a doctor. She lives
next door.
-> The woman who lives next door is a
doctor.
Ex 2: The book is about Africa. It has
many wonderful pictures.
-> The book which has many wonderful
pictures is about Africa.
Rule 1
Relative pronouns of defining relative clauses “who, which, that” can not be omitted when they are subjects in the relative clauses.
Combine the following sentences using relative pronouns.
Ex 3: The man is a doctor. You met
him last night.
-> The man whom you met last
night is a doctor.
Ex 4: John doesn’t want to sell the
house. He lives in it.
-> John doesn’t want to sell the
house which he lives in.
Ex 3: The man is a doctor. You met him
last night.
-> The man whom you met last night is
a doctor.
-> The man you met last night is a
doctor.
Ex 4: John doesn’t want to sell the
house. He lives in it.
-> John doesn’t want to sell the
house which he lives in.
-> John doesn’t want to sell the
house he lives in.
Rule 2
Relative pronouns of defining relative clauses “who, which, that” can be omitted when they are objects in the relative clauses.
Exceptions
We can not omit:
Relative pronoun in a non-defining relative clause.
Ex: Hanoi, which my grandparents is
living in, is capital of Vietnam.
Relative pronoun after a preposition.
Ex: The house in which he lives is
very old.
Exercise 1: Complete the sentences to make a relative clause without a relative pronoun.
1. Have you found the bike ................ ?
2. Most of the classmates........................................... ................................................................. couldn’t come.
3. The short stories.......................... were very funny.
