FORMAL OPERATIONAL THINKER
ABSTRACT THINKING
Tends to view ideas concretely and literally, such as concluding,
“ you need to harvest hay during the daylight hours”
Can describe the meaning of abstract ideas, such as “make hay while the sun shines” to conclude something such as, “take an opportunity when it’s given”
CONCRETE OPERATIONAL THINKER
SYSTEMATIC STRATEGIES
Systematically examines the possible influence of the length, weight, and height on the frequency of a simple pendulum.
Changes more than one variable at a time, such as changing both the length and the weight in trying to see what affects the frequency.
HYPOTHETICAL AND DEDUCTIVE THINKING
Can consider questions like “what if we lived in a country without laws?” to make conclusions, such as, “people would have autonomy, but,….”
Hypothetical ideas tend to be confusing, such as,
“I don’t understand what you want. We do have laws.”
