1. Solar energy
2. Water power
4. Coal
3. Wind energy
2. Which sources of energy are used most at present?
6. Petroleum
5. Nuclear energy
Coal, Petroleum (Nonrenewable resources - they are limited)
Solar and nuclear energy (Renewable resources - they are unlimited)
WARM UP: Work in group: Look at the pictures and answer the following questions:What source of energy does each picture refer to?
1. Which sources of energy were used most in the past?
Unit 11: SOURCES OF ENERGY
Period 71: WRITING
Aim: Describe the information from a chart about energy consumption
Task 1: a)Study the chart below
Unit 11: Sources of energy – Period 71: Writing
*In 2000:
Coal (40 million tons)
Nuclear&hydroelectricity (20
million tons)
Petroleum ( 57 million tons)
*In 2005:
Coal (45 million tons)
Nuclear& hydroelectricity(75
million tons)
Petroleum ( 50 million tons)
Task 1: b)Fill in the gaps with the information from the chart above:
The chart shows the energy consumption in Highland in 2000. As can be seen, the total energy consumption was (1) _____ million tons. Petroleum made up the largest amount of this figure (57 million tons). This was followed by the consumption of (2) _____ (40 million tons). Nuclear and hydroelectricity made up the (3) ________amount of energy consumption (20 million tons).
Unit 11: Sources of energy – Period 71: Writing

Task 2: Continue your description of the trends in energy consumption in 2005 from the chart:
The chart shows the energy consumption in Highland in 2005. As can be seen, the total energy consumption was(1) _____ million tons. Nuclear and hydroelectricity made up the largest amount of this figure (75 million tons). This was followed by the consumption of (2)___________ (50 million tons). Coal made up the(3) _______ amount of energy consumption (45 million tons).
Unit 11: Sources of energy – Period 71: Writing

Task 3: a) Work in pairs to answer the following questions:
1.Was the total energy consumption in 2005 higher or lower than it was in 2000?
2. How many tons was nuclear and hydroelectricity consumed in 2005? Was it lower or higher than it was in 2000?
3. Did petroleum consumption increase or decrease?
4. Which energy consumption ranked second in 2000, coal or petroleum?

Task 3:b) Write a paragraph to describe the energy consumption in Highland in 2000 and in 2005
** Suggested writing:
The chart shows the energy consumption in Highland in 2000 and 2005. As can be seen, the total energy consumption in 2005 was 170 million tons. So it was higher than it was in 2000 (117 million tons). In 2000, nuclear & hydroelectricity made up the smallest amount of energy consumption (20 million tons), but in 2005, it increased sharply by 55 million tons. There was also a slight increase in the consumption of coal with just five million tons. However, petroleum consumption decreased gradually from 57 tons in 2000 to 50 tons in 2005.
