Short adjectives: one syllable
Rules
in general → adj + -er
Examples
short → shorter
adjectives ending in -e → adj + -r
large → larger
adjectives ending in -y → y + -ier
dry → drier
adjectives ending in C-V-C
big → bigger
→ double final C + -er (except ending in -w) new → newer
Spelling rules
Long adjectives: two syllables or more
Examples
in general → more + adj
more beautiful
two-syllable adjectives ending in -y → y pretty → prettier
