I. Pronunciation

II. Grammar
Relative clause replaced by participles and To-infinitives
1.Present participle phrase (Active participle
Ex1: The man who is talking to John is my brother.
The man talking to John is my brother.
Ex2: English has an alphabet that consists of 26 letters.
 English has an alphabet consisting of 26 letters.
Active voice:
We use Present participle( V-ing) to replace a relative clause which has an active meaning.
2. Past participle phrase:
Ex 1 : The homework which is given by Mrs White is very difficult.
 The homework given by Mrs White is very difficult
Ex2 :The picture which was drawn by a blind has won the first prize.
The picture drawn by a blind has won the first prize.
Passive voice :
Note : We use Participle to replace a relative clause when the verb is used in the passive
3. To - Infinitives
Ex1: In 1986, Mexico became the first nation that hosted the World Cup twice.
 In 1986, Mexico became the first nation to host the World Cup twice.
Ex2: Yuri Gagarin was the first man who flew into space.
 Yuri Gagarin was the first man to fly into space.
Ex3: This is the last book that was written by J. London.
 This is the last book to be written by J. London.
Ex4:We have a lot of homework that we have to do today.
 We have a lot of homework to do today.
Ex5:There are picture books which children can read.
There are picture books for children to read.
Notes : To- Infinitive is used
after an ordinal number ( first, second....), after next, last, only, superlative adjectives.....
2. S + V + N + Relative clause
-> S + V + N + To – Infinitive
- > S + V + N + for + To – Infinitive

EXERCISE 1:Rewrite the following sentences, using a present participle phrase
1. The boy playing the piano is Ben.
2. Do you know the woman coming towards us?
3. The people waiting for the bus in the rain are getting wet.
4. The scientists researching the causes of cancer are making progress.
5. The fence surrounding our house is made of wood.
6. We have an apartment overlooking the park.
