II. Grammar: Cleft sentences

Cleft sentences
It + be + subject focus + who/ that + verb
It + be + object focus + who/ that + S + V
It + be + adverbial focus + that + S + V + O
Cleft constructions, then, exhibit the pattern:


(This is called a CLEFT SENTENCE because the original sentence has been divided (or "cleft") into two clauses)
It + be + focus +who/that +…………
Exercise 1. Write the following sentences after the model, paying attention to the subject of the sentence.
Example:
The man gave her the book.

It was the man who gave her the book.
It was the boy who visited his uncle last month.

1. The boy visited his uncle last month.
2. My mother bought me a present on my birthday.
It was my mother who bought me a present on my birthday.

Exercise 2: Write the following sentences after the model, paying attention to the object of the sentence.
Example:
The boy hit the dog in the garden.
It was the dog that the boy hit in the garden.
