Comparative forms of adjectives: review
- Short adjectives: with one syllable

The following adjectives are considered as '_short'_.

+ Adjectives with two syllables ending in “y”:

Ex: funny, easy, pretty, happy, lazy, crazy…

+ Adjectives ending in “er”, “w”, “le”

Ex: quiet, clever, narrow, simple.

- Long adjectives: with two or more syllables

1. Short and Long Adjectives:

Ex: big, small, tall, thick, hot, warm…

Ex: useful, expensive, modern, beautiful…

Exceptions:
John is taller than Tom (is).

a) Short Adjectives

Notes: How to add “_ER”

* General rule: Add “_ER” to almost all short adjectives.

* Other cases:
- Adjectives with 2 syllables ending in “y”, drop “y” then add “_IER”.

Ex: happy  happier lucky  luckier

- Adjectives ending in a consonant, preceded by a vowel, double the ending consonant, then add “_ER”.

Ex: big  bigger fat  fatter

Ex: safe  safer nice  nicer

- Adjectives ending in mute “e” , drop “e” then add “_ER”.

- Adjectives ending in _w, _er, _le, add “ER”.

* Comparative forms of adverbs

- Almost all adverbs of manner are long because they are formed by Adj_ly, so we use “more”
Ex: Mr. Pike walks more slowly than Mrs. Mary (does).

Nga works more quietly than Nam (does).

* Comparative forms of Adverbs are just like the Comparative forms of Adjectives.
Note: Some irregular forms of adverbs of manner
