III. Grammar
1.The past simple and the past continuous
Eg: They were sleeping when the dam broke.
The past continuous is used to talk about a past action in progress, and the past simple to talk about a shorter action that interrupted it
Eg: Hoa was always playing game on cell phone.

That past continuous can be used with always, constantly to describe repeated or irritating actions or events in the past. It is similar to “ used to” , but usually has negative meaning.
Put the verb in brackets in the past simple or the past continuous.

2. Definite articles and omission of article
Definite articles. – The
The definite article ‘the’ is generally used before a singular or plural noun when we talk about a specific thing or action.
Eg: The man you met yesterday is a famous writer.
- ‘the’ is used before name of musical instruments.
- Before names of oceans, rivers, seas, deserts, ranges of mountains, islands groups.
Before geographical areas, name of countries with ‘kingdom or state’.
Before name of organizations, museums, hotels, important building, newspaper, mass media, the unique objects, transport systtems.
Before adjectives used as nouns, people of a country.
b. ‘The’ is used
The is not used before;
sports, means of transport.
streets, lakes, bays, mountains, islands, most countries, states, cities, continents.
Academic subjects nationalities and languages.
Magazines.
