II. Complex sentences
There are two clauses in a complex sentences : independent clause and dependent clause
There are different types of dependent clause.
1. concession: although, though, or even though. It shows an unexpected result.
- Although she was tired, she finished knitting the scarf for her dad.
2. Purpose : so that or in order that. It tells the purpose of the action in the independent clause
- The artisan moulded the clay so that he could make a mask.
3. Reason :because, since, or as. It answers the question “Why?”
-Since it was raining, they cancelled the trip to Trang An.
4.Time : when, while, before, after, as soon as, etc. It tells when the action described in the independent clause takes place.
- When I have free time, I usually go to the museum.
Make a complex sentence from each pair of sentences. Use the subordinator provided and make any necessary changes.

1. The villagers are trying to learn English. They can communicate with foreign customers. (in order that)
2. We ate lunch. Then we went to Non Nuoc marble village to buy some souvenirs. (after)
3. This hand-embroidered picture was expensive. We bought it. (even though)
4. This department store is an attraction in my city. The products are of good quality. (because)
5. This is called a Chuong conical hat. It was made
in Chuong village. (since)
