53
WRITING SKILLS─WRITE IT UP
American Idol is the Best!
No other talent show on television is as great as American Idol because it gives people who want to become professional singers a chance to show off their talents and introduces people to music they may not have heard before.
I like American Idol because it allows singers to show how talented they are. The contestants quickly become famous around the country, and when the season ends, they earn more fame by participating in a tour. Fans show their love of the artists by dedicating Web sites to them, which also aids in increasing their fame. As for the viewers of the show, they are presented with many new singers they can listen to. And they can download anything they hear on the show immediately from iTunes. It’s also nice that they are able to follow their favorite stars from the beginning of their careers.
54
WRITING SKILLS─WRITE IT UP
Another great thing about American Idol is that it introduces people to new types of music. Each week the contestants perform songs from different eras or genres. Those used to singing only one type, like country, are forced to try something new, like rock or R&B. They also get the chance to sing in groups, which is good for improving their talents. Also, when the theme of each show is announced, a short explanation of its history is given to the audience. This encourages people to learn more about it, and gives viewers the chance to hear musical styles they might never have tried out on their own.
Although there are many singing talent shows on TV, American Idol will always be my favorite because it gives singers an amazing platform to start their careers and helps people discover other musical genres.

Jim says that he feels the same way about hockey that Alice feels about ballet, but Alice avoids hockey like the plague because of its violence.
Although Jim likes to watch games live and Alice like to watch them on TV, both of them say they enjoy basketball.
Jim lets Alice know about a game, and he says he wants to go to it. Alice agrees to go with him because she also gets a kick out of baseball.

Ben: So, who do you guys think will win the sales competition this year?
Jenny: Oh, come on, Ben. It has to be me. I’ve been the top dog for three years in a row. Who could possibly beat me?
Craig: Jenny, you are so full of yourself. There are many salespeople working here that could win.
Jenny: Really, Craig? Who do you think is the best of the best then?
Craig: Actually, I think Ben is.
Ben: Do you really think so?
Craig: Yeah. I’ve been looking over everyone’s numbers, and you’ve been doing well this quarter.
Ben: Wow! I might get a big head after hearing that!
Jenny: You guys are crazy. I’ve been checking the information too, and it’s pretty clear that I’m the cream of the crop in this office.
Craig: Why are you always on your high horse? Just relax and let someone else be special for a change.
