Task II
Listen to the audio and write down how the speakers feel. Include the words and phrases provided.
GETTING READY
Hannah is depressed after learning that she didn’t do well on an important exam. She wants to get into a certain college, but now she feels uneasy about her chances. She is really troubled over the possibility of not being able to attend that school.
7
GETTING READY
Martin also feels blue. He is downhearted because a number of his friends forgot about his birthday yesterday. He thinks he will be miserable for a long time.
James did poorly on a test, like Hannah, but it just made him optimistic about his future test results. Additionally, James is overjoyed that he got to hang out with Martin on his birthday, and having such good friends makes him feel fulfilled.
8
WORD POWER
Hannah: I’m so depressed! I got the results of my exam back, and I did very poorly. I have an uneasy feeling that now I won’t be able to get into the college I want to attend. I’m extremely troubled over this news.
Martin: I feel blue12, too, but not for the same reason. Yesterday was my birthday, and hardly anyone remembered. I’ll probably be downhearted13 for a long time because of this. How can I not be miserable when the people I care about forget about me?
James: First of all, Hannah, failing a test is not the end of the world. I had the same thing happen last week, and it’s just made me optimistic14 about how I’ll do in the future.
Hannah: How is that possible, James?
James: Well, I know that I can’t do worse; I can only improve! And Martin, I’m sorry that you’re having a bad time, but I’m still overjoyed15 that I was able to spend time with you on your special day. I feel so fulfilled16 knowing that I have such great friends, and you should, too!

WORD POWER
Brian: You arrived at the center last night, right? How was your flight from Canada?
Dean: Oh, Brian. It was a horrifying1 ordeal2! I spent the whole plane ride with my eyes covered. I can’t stand being high in the air.
Brian: I’m so glad that I don’t have a fear of heights.
Mindy: Don’t feel bad, Dean. I’m slightly afraid of heights, too. However, I’m much more terrified of spiders. If I see one, I scream and run away.
Dean: Really, Mindy? I don’t mean to ridicule3 your fear, but it seems so silly. After all, spiders are tiny. You can just smash4 them with your foot. Don’t you agree, Brian?
Brian: No way! I have a phobia5 of spiders, too. They move so fast, and sometimes they’re poisonous6. I don’t go hiking anymore because I’m so nervous about having one bite me.
Mindy: I completely agree. How about public speaking? That’s something that petrifies7 a lot of people.
Brain: Yup, I’m scared of that, too. Whenever I have to give a speech in class, I get sweaty8 and have difficulty making words. I usually end up bolting9 out of the room.
Dean: That sounds pretty embarrassing10. I used to be moderately11 afraid of speaking in front of others, but I practiced a lot, and now it’s no problem.
Mindy: Maybe I should try that because at the moment I wouldn’t speak in public even for a million dollars!
Brian: I think the therapists12 here are going to be shocked during our preliminary13 examinations. We seem to be afraid of a lot of things.

Art Therapy
Patients are encouraged to create artistic pieces that convey their feelings and emotions. Expressing oneself through art is supposed to help reduce stress and improve one’s self-esteem.
Coffin Therapy
People spend five minutes closed in a coffin pretending they are dead, and then the lid is opened to the sound of a baby’s cry. This is supposed to symbolize one’s rebirth and a new chance at life.

EXPRESSION PRACTICE
Nancy: Phillip, you’ll never guess what happened to me yesterday! Do you remember when I told you that my iPod was missing?
Phillip: Yeah. Did you find it?
Nancy: Not exactly. It turns out someone had borrowed it without permission and then accidentally broke it. My little brother came clean when I got home from class.
Phillip: I hope he offered to replace it. I had a similar experience a few months ago. My favorite jacket was mysteriously torn. I later discovered that my brother was responsible, but he had stayed tight-lipped about it until I confronted him.
Nancy: That’s terrible! I would never be able to keep something like that under my hat. I believe honesty is of the utmost importance in a good relationship.
Phillip: Well, Nancy, I kind of understood why he was scared to admit what he had done. When we were younger, he owned up to crashing my bicycle and ruining it. I got really upset, and it took me a long time to forgive him.
Nancy: I think it’s different to not breathe a word of something you’ve done wrong as a child and to not admit it as an adult.
Phillip: I suppose that’s true. The good news is that he was relieved when I forced him to get what he had done off his chest. And he did buy me a new jacket.
Nancy: I guess it worked out for everyone involved then!

You’ll be on to a good thing if you make friends with people who are from the place where you now live.
Start mimicking the behaviors of local people and participating in their traditions and your time in that country will be smooth sailing.
25
EXPRESSION PRACTICE
Moving to a new city can be tough, especially when it’s in a foreign country. Many people end up experiencing a phenomenon known as culture shock, which is a type of anxiety associated with dealing with an unfamiliar land and the people there. One of the biggest obstacles one will face is homesickness, but combating this can be a snap by communicating with loved ones online through e-mail or Skype. Additionally, people that decorate their rooms with photographs of their family and friends have the inside track when it comes to ridding themselves of those feelings of missing others back home. Another thing that gets people in a pickle is not taking care of their health, so make sure you exercise regularly. Eating nutritious food is often easier said than done, but it’s super important to do, too. Finally, feeling like an outsider can make adjusting to a new culture extremely hard. If you make friends with the locals, you’ll really be on to a good thing. You’ll have people to include you in activities and teach you about your new home. Also, once you embrace the local customs and behaviors, your time abroad will be smooth sailing because you’ll feel like you are a part of the group.

Carrie: For one thing, I’m tickled pink about the salary. It’s 10% more than what most other places are offering.
Ben: I think it would take a lot more than that to make me a happy camper.
Carrie: Well, I’m also over the moon about the commute. I’ll be able to get to the office in less than 20 minutes.
Ben: Now that is something I’m jealous of!
Carrie: And you know what else? There’s a cafeteria on the first floor, so on rainy days, I won’t even have to leave the building for lunch!
Ben: Wow! I’d be happy as a clam to have that kind of convenience. I usually have to bring my own lunch from home because there’s nothing close to my office.

Advice for Students Traveling on a Budget
Introduction:
Being a student can be hard, especially when one has dreams of traveling. Everything related to travel is expensive, and students have little money to spare. Luckily, there are some easy things that can be done to make a trip abroad possible on a student’s meager budget.
Body:
First, check out tour companies in the area. Traveling as part of a tour group is a great way to see lots of things and split the cost of a guide among a large group of people. Additionally, your fee to the tour company will typically cover the costs of entering the tourist destinations you’ll visit, like museums, so you won’t need to worry about having extra cash on hand to cover those costs.
51
Second, inquire about prices at hostels. They are generally much cheaper than hotels and provide many of the same services. They may not be as luxurious as standard hotels, but they will provide you with a place to sleep and shower, which is all you really need.
Third, stay away from popular travel times. Organize travel for off-peak times, like May or October. Since fewer people travel during those times, prices for everything travel-related are usually discounted. Besides that, there will be fewer tourists at your destination, so crowds will be less of a problem.
Conclusion:
If you really want to travel the world, don’t let being a student on a tight budget stop you! I’ve been able to travel cheaply many times. There are tons of options available to make your trip affordable and fun.

Ben: I think it would take a lot more than that to make me a happy camper.
Carrie: Well, I’m also over the moon about the commute. I’ll be able to get to the office in less than 20 minutes.
