-ING PHRASES or –ED PHRASES
What is a participle?
A particular is a verbal, or verb form, that can be used as an adjective.
Past participles end in –d or –ed.
Others are irregularly formed.
Present participles end in -ing
1. Present participles
Examples:
1. The comedian was amusing.
2. The playing boys did not hear their mother call.

Examples:
That faded rug belonged to my aunt.
Hopelessly lost and worried, the driver stopped and asked the police officer for directions.

What is a participle phrase?
A participle phrase consists of a participle and its modifiers and complements.
A participle phrase is used as an adjective.
Note!! To avoid confusion, place the participle phrase as close as possible to the word it modifies.
Examples of participle phrase
Imagining herself in space, Jeanette dreamed she was an astronaut.
She imagines a young woman floating smoothly outside a space capsule.
Soon, soothed by these pleasant thoughts, she drifted off to sleep.
