Do you know about thermal pollution?
Thermal pollution is dumping of heated gases or heated wastewater (often from electrical generating plants) into the air or water.
Ô nhiễm nhiệt là việc thải các khí nóng hoặc nước thải nóng (thường là các nhà máy phát điện) vào trong không khí hoặc nước.

Thermal pollution include the ways in which air and water become hotter as a result of artificial stimuli. One example is a lake overheating because of a nearby factory
Ô nhiễm nhiệt bao gồm những cách mà không khí và nước trở nên nóng hơn do kích thích nhân tạo. Một ví dụ là hồ quá nóng vì một nhà máy gần đó

Reporter:
Does thermal pollution mean that bodies of water get hotter, Mr Nam?
Mr Nam:
Not always. Sometime the water becomes colder, and that's also thermal pollution. In general, thermal pollution means a change in the water temperature.
Reporter:
That's interesting! What causes it?
Mr Nam:
Power stations are one factor. They use water in the nearby lakes or rivers to cool their equipment, which heats up the water. Then they dump the hot water back into its source.
Reporter:
Are there any other causes?
Mr Nam:
Yes. Thermal pollution may also happen due to the discharge of cold water from reservoirs into warm rivers.
Reporter:
Thermal pollution can have dramatic effects. Right?
Mr Nam:
Certainly. Most aquatic creatures need a certain temperature to survive. Warmer water has less oxygen in it, and this can harm fish populations. Besides, warmer water can cause harmful algal blooms. This can change the colour of the water like in the first picture and, more seriously, the algae poisons the fish.
Reporter:
What can we do, Mr Nam?
Mr Nam:
In many places, they build cooling towers like in the second picture to cool down the water from power stations.
Reporter:
Anything else we can do?...

Discuss the causes and effects of one type of pollution in your are. Make notes in the diagram.
Air pollution Definition: Air pollution occurs when the air contains gases, dust, fumes or odour in harmful amounts.
Causes: industrial waste, exhaust from cars and plane…
Effects: causing diseases, death to human, damage to other living organisms such as animals and food crops, or the natural or built environment.

Causes of Water Pollution
There are many causes lead to water pollution. Here are some the main causes:
The first is industrial waste which dump from the factories. The toxic chemicals will change the color of water, increase the amount of minerals, change the temperature of water.
The sewage and waste water that is produced by each household is chemically treated and released into sea with fresh water. The sewage water carries harmful bacteria and chemicals that can cause serious health problems.
Pesticides and herbicides are used by farmers to protect crops from insects and weeds. They are useful for the plants growth. However, when these chemicals are mixed up with water produce harmful for plants and animals. Also, when it rains, the chemicals mixes up with rainwater and flow down into rivers and canals which pose serious damages for aquatic animals.

Effects of Water Pollution
The effects of water pollution are varied and depend on what chemicals are dumped and in which locations.
The main problem caused by water pollution is that it kills life that depends on these water bodies. Dead fish, crabs, birds and sea gulls, dolphins, and many other animals often wind up on beaches, killed by pollutants in their habitat (living environment).
Humans are affected by this process as well. People can get diseases such as hepatitis by eating seafood that has been poisoned. In many poor nations, there is always outbreak of cholera and diseases as a result of poor drinking water treatment from contaminated waters.
Ecosystems (the interaction of living things in a place, depending on each other for life) can be severely changed or destroyed by water pollution. Many areas are now being affected by careless human pollution, and this pollution is coming back to hurt humans in many ways.
