1. Describe what you see in the pictures and talk about the relationship between them.
=> They are both related to thermal pollution
The first picture shows an algal bloom in coastal seawater.
The second picture shows the cooling towers from a power station.
Unit 7: POLLUTION
Lesson 6 : Skills 2
Teacher: Bui Thi Chin
1. VOCABULARY
algal (n)
bloom (v,n)
discharge (n,v)
Power plant (n)
Power station (n)
: tảo
: nở hoa
: phóng điện
: nhà máy nhiệt điện
: trạm phát điện

Reporter: Does thermal pollution mean that bodies of water get hotter, Mr Nam?
Mr Nam: Not always. Sometimes the water becomes colder, and that’s also thermal pollution. In general, thermal pollution means a change in the water temperature.
Reporter: That’s interesting! What causes it?
Mr Nam: Power stations are one factor. They use water in the nearby lakes or rivers to cool their equipment, which heats up the water. Then they dump the hot water back into its source.
Reporter: Are there any other causes?
Mr Nam: Yes. Thermal pollution may also happen due to the discharge of cold water from reservoirs into warm rivers.
Reporter: Thermal pollution can have dramatic effects. Right?
Mr Nam: Certainly. Most aquatic creatures need a certain temperature to survive. Warmer water has less oxygen in it, and this can harm fish populations. Besides, warmer water can cause harmful algal blooms. This can change the colour of the water like in the first picture and, more seriously, the algae poisons the fi sh. Reporter: What can we do, Mr Nam?
Mr Nam: In many places, they build cooling towers like in the second picture to cool down the water from power stations.
Reporter: Anything else we can do? …

3. Work in pairs. Discuss the causes and effects of one type of pollution in your area. Make notes in the diagram.
Air pollution
Definition: Air pollution occurs when the air contains gases, dust, fumes or odour in harmful amounts.

Causes: industrial waste, exhaust from cars and plane…
Effects: causing diseases, death to human, damage to other living organisms such as animals and food crops, or the natural or built environment.

4. Imagine that you two are writing an article for the local newspaper about a type of pollution in your area. One of you writes about the causes and the other writes about the effects of the pollution type you have just discussed in 3.
Nowadays, air pollution has a big impact on the environment. Air pollution is the release of particulates, biological molecules or other harmful materials into Earth’s atmosphere. It causes diseases and death to humans, damage to other living organisms. There are a lot of causes and effects of air pollution. I`d like to explain more in the following paragraphs.
There are some causes of pollution such as: burning of fossil fuels, agricultural activities, exhaust from favorite and industries, mining operations and indoor air pollution. These activities contribute to air pollution. We need to raise awareness in the community about these causes to reduce them.
These causes lead to so many effects such as respiratory and heart problems, globals warming , acid rain, effect on wildlife and depletion of the ozone layer. These effects damage human life dramatically . they are the reason why we need to prevent air pollution as much as possible to create a better habitat.
One of you writes about the causes and the other writes about the effects of the pollution type you have just discussed in 3.
Air Pollution
Air pollution is one of a serious type of pollution. Air pollution occurs when the air contains gases, dust, fumes in harmful amounts which are harmful to man, vegetation, and animals….
Air pollution can have many different causes. The major source of air pollution is industrial waste from factories. The second is the exhaust from cars, motor vehicles and planes...
Air pollution can have dramatic effects. It causes various dangerous diseases, death to human, damage to other living organisms such as animals and food crops, or the natural environment and the buildings look dirty.
So, what should we do to reduce air pollution?
5. Read each other’s work and put them together to make a complete article.
