WARM-UP
ALASKA
1. a. Read the passage. Find a word and a phrase from the passage and write them
under their correct pictures.
ALASKA
Alaska is perhaps the most amazing state in the USA. It has coastlines
facing both the Arctic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. This state has three
million lakes. That's four lakes per person living there. We cannot reach
many cities in Alaska by road, sea, or river. The only way to get there is
by air, foot, or dogsled. That's why Alaska has the busiest sea airport in
the world, the Lake Hood Seaplane Base. Nearly two hundred float
planes take off and land on the water of this airport every day. It's really
a fun scene to watch. In summer, the sun does not set for nearly three
months in Alaska. But in winter we rarely see the sun. It is dark All
Alaskans take special pride in their beautiful and unique state.

Read the list of activities and discuss which ones are energy-saving and
which ones are not. Explain your answer.
1. Opening doors and windows during the day to get sunlight.
2. Spending more time indoors than outdoors.
3. Closing doors and windows tightly when the air conditioner is on.
4. Reusing bottles, paper, and clothes.
5. Taking a bus to school instead of taking a car.
6. Using plastic bags for shopping.
Energy saving:
1. Opening doors and windows during the day to get sunlight so you do not
need to use electricity for light bulbs.
3. Closing doors and windows tightly when the air conditioner is on. This will
keep the temperature in the room stable.
4. Reusing bottles, paper, and clothes. By doing this, you will reduce the
amount of waste.
5. Taking a bus to school instead of taking a car. This will help you save petrol
as a bus can take much more passengers than a car does.
Not energy saving
2. Spending more time indoors than outdoors. If you stay in, you'll need
electricity for light bulbs.
6. Using plastic bags for shopping. This is a very bad habit because
plastic bags use fossil fuels, a non-renewable resource, and are
permanent, entering the waste stream forever.

children and their parents. Here are some of the questions
they may ask you.
1.There are special lanes for bicycles on land, how about in
the air? If you don't have lanes for them, the bicycles will
crash into each other.
2. Are there any air traffic laws? If there are, are they similar
to those on land? How will the children learn them?
3. How can a flying bike find a place to land by itself? Will
children have an electronic map? What will happen if the map
does not work? Can you add any more questions?
WRITING
4
Choose one of the future means of transport below. Write a paragraph of
about 70 words about it.
Example:
The bamboo-copter will be a popular
means of transport in the future. It's not
very fast, so it's safe to ride. It's cheap, and
it doesn't use much energy. Most people
can afford it. It's also convenient because
you can go anywhere: in a busy city, to the
sea, or to the mountains. The copter is
small and can carry only one person, so it
doesn't take up much space. I love it.
