Conditional sentences
- if: nếu như
Unless = If…not…: nếu không, luôn ở dạng khẳng định nhưng mang nghĩa phủ định.
(conditional sentences type 1,2)
Conditional sentence = If-clause + main clause
1. Conditional sentences type 0
a. Use
Câu điều kiện loại 0 (Zero conditional) là câu điều kiện diễn tả thói quen, sự thật hiển nhiên hay một chân lý.
b. Form
If + S + V(s,es), S+ V(s,es)/imperative
Eg. If it rains, the grass gets wet.
2. Conditional sentences type 1
a. Use
Điều kiện có thể xảy ra ở hiện tại hoặc tương lai.
b. Form
If + S + V(s,es), S + Will/Can/shall + V
Eg. If the weather is nice, I will go swimming tomorrow.
3. Conditional sentences type 2
a. Use
Điều kiện không có thật ở hiện tại
b. Form
If + S + V2/ Ved, S +would/ could/ should + V
Eg. If I were you, I would follow her advice.
Conditional sentences

If + S + V(s,es), S+ V(s,es)/imperative

If + S + V(s,es), S + Will/Can/shall + V
If + S + V2/ Ved, S +would/ could/ should + V
4. Conditional sentences type 3
a. Use
Điều kiện không có thật trong quá khứ
b. Form
If +S +had +P2, S + would/ could/might+ have +P2
Eg. If I had studied the lessons, I could have answered the questions.
He didn’t go to school yesterday so his parents punished him.
If he had gone to school yesterday, his parents
wouldn’t have punished him.
If I see him , I _____ (give) him a gift.

Exercise 2. Rewrite the following sentences
1. They can’t go out because they have to study for the exam.
=> If they didn’t have to study, they could go out.
2. She is lazy so she can’t pass the exam.
=> If she were not lazy, she could pass the exam.
3. He didn’t revise all his lessons, he failed the exam.
=> If he had revised the lessons, he wouldn’t have failed
the exam.
4. If you do not hurry, you’ll be late.
=> Unless you hurry, you’ll be late.
5. He doesn’t take any exercises. He is so unhealthy.

=> He would be healthy if he took (some) exercises.
