Up to September 2011 in HCM City, there were 750 traffic accidents, about 1.000 people died and injured. The number of deaths increased by 10 people compared with 2010.

The bad effects of traffic accidents
In September 2011, there were 8 out of 24 districts in HCM City increased numbers of deaths such as District 2, District 7, District 12, Binh Tan District, Thu Duc District,… These districts had the biggest number of deaths in HCM.
+ Our actual situation in Vietnam’s traffic is very serious. According to recent researches, Vietnam ranks 11th in the world with the number of the dead people due to traffic accidents.
+ There are an average of 30 people dies a day because of traffic accidents in Vietnam.

According to the reports from World Health Organization (WHO) and World Bank (WB), there are 1.2 million people died of road traffic accidents, about 50 million people injured. Two organizations warn that if the governments from countries don’t take measures preventing this situation, traffic accidents will rank third in causes which cause death in 2020.

South Africa is the country which has the biggest number of road traffic accidents. The majority of accidents concern about cars which fell into the river. Every year, this country occurs about 500,000 traffic accidents and kills 10,000 people.

WHO said that in America, there were 134,000 died of traffic accidents every year, which account for more than 10% of the world. The USA ranked first with 44,000 people, followed by Brasil, Mexico and Venezuela. On the occasion of World Health’s Day this year, WHO are going to launching a campaign whose name is “Road safety”. The aim of the campaign is to prevent 3 main causes which lead to traffic accidents such as driving after drinking alcohol, not controlling the speed, not fastening seat belts.

There is an accident occurred with Ms. Miyamoto Michiko (50 years old, Japanese citizen) who has disability. On the afternoon of 30/09/2013, she took the bus to Ben Thanh bus station. When Michiko came here, she crutched on the lane for walkers. Unfortunately, she unexpectedly fell on the street . At that time, a bus appeared and rolled over her body. That accident made her die in place.

An English teacher whose name is Wayne Madison (55 years old, U.S citizen) died because of traffic accidents in HCM City. About 9:30am of September 9th , he drove a bike on Huỳnh Tấn Phát Street towards to Tan Thuan Export Processing Zone (District 7). When he came to the junction with Lưu Trọng Lư street, he turned left. Unfortunately, a truck appeared, hit his bike and made him fell on the street. The wheels of the truck rolled over his body and he died in place.

Traffic in Japan
The government of Japan have to give a conception whose name is “Traffic war” because the number of people died of traffic accidents are equivalent with the number of ones in wars in the past.
Apparently, Vietnam and Japan have the same characteristics about traffic situation. The Japanese Government especially concentrate on raising the traffic’s awareness for the chidren when they are very young. Thanks to these measures, Japan has had the safetest traffic system in the world.

Traffic safety is happiness of everyone in today’s society. Youths are the owners of the country, who are the pioneers in many sectors. They need to think, act and implement practical solutions rightly to decrease the number of traffic accidents.
Youth union members are the pioneers in maintaining order and safety in traffic.
