COUNTABLE NOUN AND UNCOUNTABLE NOUN


Plural of nouns
* Principle of converting to the plural



Usually nouns take S in the plural.


For example: chair - chairs; girl - girls; dog – dogs


2. Nouns ending in O, X, S, Z, CH, SH add ES in the plural.


Example: potato - potatoes; box - boxes; bus - buses; buzz - buzzes;


watch - watches; dish - dishes
Exception 1:
a) Nouns ending in vowels + O only add S in the plural.

For example: cuckoos, cameos, bamboos, curios, studios, radios

b) Nouns ending in O but having non-English origin only add S in the plural.

Examples: pianos, photos, dynamo, magnetos, kilos, mementos, solos
c) Nouns ending in consonant + Y, then convert Y to I before adding ES.

Example: lady - ladies; story - stories

d) Nouns ending in F or FE are converted to the plural VES.

Example: leaf - leaves, knife - knives

Exception 2:
a) The following nouns only add S in the plural:

roofs: roof gulfs: bay

cliffs: rocky slope reefs: reefs

proofs: proof. Chiefs: Chief

turfs: topsoil safes: safes

dwarfs: dwarf griefs: pain

beliefs: beliefs



b) The following nouns have two plural forms:

scarfs, scarves: scarf

wharfs, wharves: wooden jetty

staffs, staves: staffs

hoofs, hooves: hooves

Special cases
1. The following nouns have a special plural:

man - men: đàn ông
woman - women: phụ nữ
child - children: trẻ con
tooth - teeth: răng
feet - feet: bàn chân
mouse - mice: chuột nhắt
goose - geese: con ngỗng
louse - lice: con rận

2. The following nouns have the same singular and plural form:

deer: con nai
sheep: con cừu
swine: con heo

- Used in affirmation

Mr. Baker drinks some beer everyday

- Before a noun that can count the plural and a noun that cannot be counted

There are some bananas on the table

Tom needs some time to relax.

- Some is also used in the "request, offer" sentence.

Ex: Would you like some milk?

- Used in negative and question sentences

I don`t like hearing any curses at all

Used in affirmative sentences but means "any"
