Activity 1: Listen and put a mark (‘) before the stressed syllable in each word.
Three-syllable nouns.
- Stress falls on the 2nd syllable when:
+ The last syllable has a short vowel and the 2nd syllable has a diphthong or a long vowel.
Eg: pagoda/pəˈɡəʊdə/;
banana/bəˈnɑːnə/
+ The last syllable has a vowel /əʊ/ and the 2nd syllable has a diphthong or a long vowel.
Eg: potato/pəˈteɪtəʊ/;
kimono/kɪˈməʊnəʊ/
- Stress falls on the 1st syllable when the 2nd and last syllable have a short vowel.
Eg: family /`fæmili/;
cinema/ˈsɪnəmə/
- The syllable before –tion or –sion is usually stressed.
Eg: tradition /trəˈdɪʃn/
