Family life – Changing roles
Task 1. Look at the chart and discuss the changes in weekly hours of basic housework by married men and married women in the USA between 1976 and 2012. Guess the reasons for the changes.
The chart shows that the changes in weekly hours of basic housework by married men and married women in the USA were dramatic (from 6,7% in 1976 to 29,8% in 2012). They had to do housework two times compared with the married American women (from 11,4% in 1976 to 17,2% in 2012).
In my opinion, American married women must have gone to work while their husbands might have been unemployed so they had to stay at home to do their housework for their wives.
Task 1. Talk about the changes in weekly hours of basic housework by married men and married women in the USA between 1976 and 2012.

3. What is the result of ‘equally shared parenting’?
1. How has the role of men in the family changed?
- They are not the only breadwinner in the family, and they get more involved in housework and parenting.
2. How have men’s and women’s roles become alike?
- Both are responsible for family finances, home-making/housework, and parenting.
- The families become happier and the divorce rate amongst them is the lowest.
Task 5: Talk about changing role in your family
