A. Pronunciation:
Stress in three-syllable words
I. Listen and repeat:
4. The GCSE stands for the General Certificate of secondary education.
English, Maths and Science are compulsory in the national examination
at certain stages of the school education system.
3.The national curriculum is usually set by the government.
2.The typical school day normally finishes at 3.00 p.m in England.
1.The academic school year generally commences in September .
A. Pronunciation:
Stress in three-syllable words
II. Practise reading these sentences:
I. Pronunciation: Stress in three –syllable words
Rule 1: Stress in the first syllable of words ending with: -ate, - y, -ary -ise/ize , -ude, ….
Eg. ‘Educate, , ‘chemistry, ‘necessary, ‘organise, `modernize, `attidude,
Rule 2: Stress in the second syllable of words ending with: -ic, -tion, -sion, -ian,- ical, -al, -ial
Exception: `television, `politics, `arobic, `catholic
Eg. Sta`tistic, re`jection, de`cision, mu`sician, `physical, pa`rental, e`ssential
Rule 3: Stress in the syllable containing :
lemo`nade, refu`gee, Japa`nese engi`neer, ciga`rette, after`noon, question`naire,, enter`tain
-ade, -ee, -ese, -eer, -ette, -oon, -aire, -ique,
-ain
Exception: coffee /`kɔfi/,
committee /kə`miti/
employee /im`plɔii:/
Rule 4: Stress in the 2nd syllable when the 1st or the 3rd syllable is /ə/ or /i/ :
Ex: computer /kəm`pju:tə(r)/
potato /pə`teitəu/
remember /ri`membə(r)/
imagine /i`mæʤin/
Note: prefixes and suffixes : un-, im-, in-, ir- , dis, non- , en-, re-, -ly, -ing, -er, -ible,… do not change word stress.
Eg. `healthy -> un`healthy
`patient -> im`patient…
`happy -> `happily
