Đông Nam Á là cầu nối giữa hai châu lục, hai đại dương với các đường giao thông ngang, dọc trên biển và nằm giữa hai quốc gia có nền văn minh lâu đời. Vị trí đó đã ảnh hưởng tới đặc điểm dân cư, xã hội của các nước trong khu vực.

Đông Nam Á chủ yếu thuộc chủng tộc nào?
 - Khu vực Đông Nam Á gồm có 11 quốc gia, dân số khu vực đông, tỉ lệ gia tăng dân số tự nhiên ở mức cao.

Dân cư phân bố không đều: tập trung đông đúc tại các vùng đồng bằng và vùng ven biển.

- Dân cư Đông Nam Á sử dụng nhiều ngôn ngữ khác nhau, nhiều quốc gia thuộc hải đảo sử dụng tiếng Anh.

- Các nước trong khu vực Đông Nam Á vừa có những nét tương đồng trong lịch sử đấu tranh giành độc lập dân tộc, trong sản xuất và sinh hoạt, phong tục tập quán vừa có sự đa dạng trong văn hoá từng dân tộc.
- Đó là những điều kiện thuận lợi cho sự hợp tác toàn diện giữa các nước.

- Dân cư phân bố không đều.
  + Dân cư tập trung đông (trên 100 người/km^2) ở vùng ven biển của Việt Nam, Mi-an-ma, Thái Lan, Một số đảo của In-đô-nê-xi-a và Phi-líp-pin.

  + Trong nội địa và ở các đảo dân cư tập trung ít hơn.

- Nguyên nhân do vùng ven biển thường có các đồng bằng với những điều kiện thuận lợi cho con người sinh sống và phát triển sản xuất nông nghiệp, xây dựng các làng mạc, thành phố.
