TET HOLIDAY

While "Christmas" is a meaningful holiday in the United States and "Day of the Dead" is a major festival in Mexico, you may not be aware of the most interesting holiday in Vietnam, known as Lunar New Year or Tet Ta! Tet is an opportunity for young people to reunite with their families and enjoy spring.

It is celebrated from the end of January through the beginning of February. Tet is a three-day festival, but according to the Lunar Calendar, it can last for at least the first week! Tet is a Vietnamese holiday that is organized by Vietnamese people and celebrated throughout the country.

Tet is a day when families gather to celebrate. Every house cleans up in the weeks leading up to Tet to sweep away all the bad things from the previous year. People often buy peach blossoms or kumquat trees to brighten their homes on these days; furthermore, they usually place a tray of five fruits on the altar to give thanks to their ancestors. If we do not experience Banh Chung, a famous food that we can easily see on Tet, it will be a waste.

Family members normally have a feast together on the last night of the old year while waiting for the moment when the clock strikes 00.00 o`clock. However, other families cook Banh Chung on the last day of the old year. People commonly pay visits to grandparents, relatives, and neighbors on the first day of the new year to wish them good health, success, and a happy new year. Children`s parents or relatives give red envelopes containing lucky money to children. On these days, women frequently attend church or temples to pray for the well-being of their families.

In conclusion, Tet is a significant occasion, a holiday that is forever anticipated by all Vietnamese. This is the time to relax next to our beloved family.
