LITERATURE:
RECOGNIZING
NEW
Abstract: Conversion is one of the most common and
productive ways to form new words in languages,
especially English. This study was designed to
consider the productivity of the two types of
conversion in English regarding creating new
vocabulary items: total and partial, as well as to
suggest some criteria that help learners recognize
these new English lexical items.
First, the inductive method was used to synthesise
theories from available sources about the conversion of
parts of speech. These theories are the basics to base on
when surveying the conversion parts of speech in English
literature. Then, the authors applied the quantitative
method to consider the productivity of two types of
conversion in English in numerical data and the qualitative
method to build up criteria to help learners recognize
vocabulary items. Results indicated that partial conversion
created far more new words than the total counterpart.
Besides, readers should notice morphology, syntax, and
semantics to recognize new words formed by conversion.
Keywords: Conversion, productivity, new vocabulary,
English literature

12 STUDENTS' ERRORS IN VERB TENSES
Abstract: In the process of the mastering over
English tenses, students make errors naturally
and inevitably. Fortunately, findings have
proved that teachers can help students
embrace errors on verb tenses by useful
treatments. The main purpose of this paper is
to realize the reason for student's errors in
tenses and to get suitable treatments for those
errors.
The teachers organized the controlled and experimental
classes. The former was given reviews on tenses
without treatments for their errors while the latter was
provided not only reviews on tenses but also suggested
treatments for their errors. The results of the pre-test
indicated that there was no significant difference in the
grammatical knowledge about tenses between the two
classes, yet the post-test results in the experimental
class showed the far better improvement in comparison
to the former in the controlled class. Moreover, the
students in the experimental class expressed very high
level of interest and motivation on participating in
learning activities.
Keywords: error, tense, controlled, experimental
