WHILE LISTENING

2 Listen and number the picture.

Mark: Mum! There's lots of rubbish in the garden. Should I put it in the bin?
Mum: Don't, Mark! I'm making a compost pile.
Mark: From rubbish?
Mum: Yes, the best way to build a compost pile is by using things we often
throw away after cooking, or things we burn in the garden.
Mark: Really? I didn't know that.
Mum: Here, I've cleared a space in the garden and built the base layer of
straw and twigs. Let's make the compost pile together. We can start by
spreading brown materials on the ground. I've collected some old
newspapers and dry leaves for this layer.
Mark: Like this?
Mum: Yes. Then add another layer, but this time we'll use green materials.
Mark: Do you mean the grass clippings?
Mum: Yes, please also add this bag of household waste, including vegetable
scraps, fruit peels, and used tea. They are also part of the green materials.

VIDEO 5

Mark: And then?
Mum: Add a thin layer of soil.
Mark: Like this?
Mum: Yes. Now, water everything.
Mark: Done! What's next, Mum?
Mum: Repeat these steps and add more layers ... brown ... and green ... then more soil
and water ...
Mark: Is that all?
Mum: No, once a week we'll need to turn the compost pile and water it. We'll continue
until it turns soft and dark brown.
Mark: That sounds like a lot of work!
Mum: But it's worth it. Look at my lovely flowers and healthy plants.
Mark: So that's your secret for having the best garden in the neighbourhood!
Mum: (laugh) Yes. By using compost, we can not only avoid chemical fertilisers, but also
reuse our household and garden waste instead of sending it to the landfill.
Mark: That's right! And composting is a great way to go green! Here, let me help you ...

POST LISTENING

4 Work in groups. Discuss these questions.

How do you manage
your household and
garden waste?
Is it environmentally
friendly?

SUGGESTED ANSWER
I manage my household and garden waste by separating and
recycling. For example, I sort plastic, paper, and glass into
different bins. This helps them get recycled properly. In the
garden, I collect leaves, grass clippings, and vegetable scraps to
make compost. It's an easy way to turn waste into something
useful. The compost helps my plants grow better without needing
chemical fertilizers.
Yes, it's environmentally friendly because recycling reduces the
amount of waste that goes to landfills, and composting enriches
the soil naturally. This way, we reduce pollution and save
resources. By doing these small things, we can all help take care
of our planet. It's not hard, and it feels good to know I'm doing my
part. Plus, it's nice to see my garden thrive from the compost I
make at home!
