(Hang) Hi, everybody! We’re Hang, Nam, Nga and Binh. We belong to group Lovely Kitten.
As you knows, there are 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam, so it is a multi-cultural country, which is also rich in tradition and custom.
The question raised here is that how our traditions and customs have changed over the years. To learn this, we conducted to interview our Grandmas and Moms. It is interesting for us to find out many changes in our traditions and customs. Now we would like to tell you some among them.
Model project:
(Nam) First of all, the custom of visiting pagoda has changed and let me tell you more about it.
In the past, people went to pagoda only on special occasions such as on New Year`s Eve and on the fifteenth day of the lunar months… to pray for their family’s safety, good health, prosperity, and good luck. But today people are more superstitious. They do that whenever they meet difficulties and deadlock in life. In the past, each village had its own pagoda. The villagers went to this pagoda to pray. Now, this custom has also changed. People only go to the pagodas which are of great renown, splendid with nice landscapes … They no longer care about the solemn but “poorer” ones. It`s so bad, isn’t it?
(Nga) Next, the custom and tradition of celebrating death anniversaries has changed and let`s know more about it.
In the past, people prepared for it nearly a year ahead. Then on the day of anniversary, the host invited all his relatives and neighbours to join the anniversary, which was rather costly, but a lot of fun and formed good relationships with all of the other people. But now people seem to have the tendency to celebrate death anniversaries within the family. They don’t invite any neighbours to join the event because they try to cut down the expenditure in life, and more importantly they don’t have much time for the activities like these meanwhile they “make ends meet”.
(Binh) Finally, the custom and tradition of wearing Ao dai in wedding ceremonies has changed and I’ll tell you more about it.
In the past, the groom and the bride had to wear Ao dai and headdresses (khăn đóng) during the wedding ceremonies and this is a must. The mothers of the bride and the groom had to weave the cloth themselves and then made the costumes for the bride and the groom, which was a hard work and time-consuming. But now the bride and the groom don’t need to wear them any more. Instead, they wear modern clothes which they can either have them made or rent from a shop. Nowadays, some wear Ao dai and headdresses but they are considered fashionable.
