1.An action happening and ending before a point of
time or before another action in the past.
Ex : She had written two letters by 10 o’clock
yesterday morning.
My son had eaten three sandwiches by the time
I returned.
2. An action happening and still going on to the point
of time or another action in the past.
Ex : - I had played tennis for ten minutes
by 10 o’clock yesterday morning.
- He had learned English for two years when I
visited him last year.
