In Western countries, electricity, gas, and water are not luxuries but necessities. Companies now realize that consumers want products that will not only work effectively, but also save money.
For most North American households, lighting accounts for 10 percent to 15 percent of the electricity bill. However, this amount can be reduced by replacing an ordinary 100-watt light bulb with an energy-saving bulb. These bulbs use a quarter of the electricity of standard bulbs and last eight times longer. Therefore consumers can save about US$7 to US$21 per bulb.
In Europe, there is a labeling scheme for refrigerators, freezers, washing machines and tumble dryers. The label tells the consumers how much energy efficiency each model has, compared with other appliances in the same category.
Ultimately, these innovations will save money as well as conserve the Earth’s resources.
II. Reading
b. Answer the questions:
1. What are Western consumers interested in?
2. What can we do to spend less on lighting?
4. What is the purpose of the labeling scheme?
5. Why should we save energy?
3. Mrs. Jones uses only 2 ordinary bulbs and she pay 8 USD for lighting. How much will she pay if she uses 2 energy-saving bulbs?
They are interested in products that will not only work effectively but also save money .
Because we can save money as well as conserve the natural resources.
She will pay only 2 USD.
The purpose of the labeling scheme is to tell the consumer how energy efficiency each model has.
We can replace an ordinary 100 watt light bulbs by using saving-energy bulbs .

2. Phrasal verbs (Cụm đông từ / động từ kép)

Phrasal verbs (Cụm động từ/ động từ kép) :

Định nghĩa + cấu tạo:
- Cụm động từ (động từ kép) là sự kết hợp giữa một động từ và một hoặc hai particle ( tiểu từ) (tiểu từ có thể là 1 giới từ, 1 trạng hoặc bao gồm 1trạng từ và 1 giới từ) theo sau

Form:
Phrasal verb = verb + particle
preposition
adverb
adverb + preposition
Ex: - run (v) : chạy
- run into (v); gặp tình cờ
(preposition)
Ex: - hang (v) : treo
- hang out (v): đi lang thang

(adverb)
Ex: - put (v): đặt, để
- put up with (v) : chịu đựng

( adv) (pre)
- Nghĩa của một động từ kép thường khác hoàn toàn với nghĩa của động từ gốc. Đôi khi một động từ kép còn có nhiều nghĩa.
Ex: Turn off the lights before leaving our classroom
Ex: You’re walking to fast. I can’t keep up with you.
Lưu ý: Cụm động từ ( động từ kép) được chia ra làm hai loại:

1. Một số cụm động từ (động từ kép) có thể phân tách ( separable phrasal verbs)
( Khi cụm động từ có tân ngữ (object) thì trong một số trường hợp tân ngữ có thể đứng ở cả hai vị trí: trước hoặc sau tiểu từ.) Ta có thể nói
Ex1: I turned off the light before leaving home.
hay ( I turned the light off before leaving home.)
Ex2: Lisa switched on the radio
Lisa switched the radio on.
Nếu tân ngữ là đại từ ( this, that, it/ them/ me/ him…) thì đại từ này sẽ đứng ở giữa động từ và ‘particle’:

Ex: I turn it off. (Không dùng: I turn off it.)
Ex: The baby is asleep. Don’t wake her up.

2. Một số động từ kép không thể phân cách ( inseparable phrasal verbs): túc từ luôn luôn đứng sau giới từ.
Ex: They grew up in England.
Ex: Our car broke down and had to be towed to a garage.
Ex: I really look up to my father
