ELEPHANTS
Elephants are the largest of all land mammals. They are warm-blooded herbivorous vertebrates, whose temperature remains the same in spite of the changes of surrounding environment.
There are two types of elephants: African elephants and Indian Elephants. The African Elephant is classified as the Loxodonta Africana of Africa and the Indian one as Elephas maximus of South-central Asia. African and Asian elephants are both enormous, grey, four-legged creatures with almost hairless skin, a distinctive long, flexible, and prehensile trunk, and upper incisors that form long curved tusks of ivory. However, African elephants have large fan-shaped ears while Indian elephants’ ears are smaller. An adult African elephant can grow to between 10 and 13 feet and weigh about 15,400 pounds, while an Asian elephant reaches a maximum height of 10 feet and a weight of 11,000 pounds.
Elephants can live for up to 70 years. They can walk about 4 mph and swim for long distances. They eat mainly plants and grass. An elephant spends an average of 16 hours a day eating and consumes as much as 495 pounds of food per day.
At present, elephants are on the verge of extinction due to the introduction of exotic species, disease, pollution, over exploitation, and, especially, the ivory trade and diminishing habitat. Endangered species organizations such as the African Elephant Conservation Act and the Endangered Species Act, are making great efforts to conserve elephants, which are among the world’s most endangered species.
