Lesson 3. READING - URBANISATION AND ITS CAUSES
I. OBJECTIVES: By the end of the lesson, students will have:
Ability:
to practise their reading skill through a text about URBANISATION AND ITS CAUSES
to express their own ideas about the causes of urbanisation in Hanoi / Ho Chi Minh city
to learn some new vocabulary items related to the topic such as: expanding, counter – urbanization, increase, double, migrate, centralise
to pronunciation of new words, especially stressed sounds
Skills:
+ skimming for the general idea (prediction task)
+ guessing the meaning of words in context (gap- filling task)
+ scanning for specific details ( question and answer task)
II. PREPARATION: textbooks, chalk, blackboard, laptop, projector, handouts

It is a process by which urban areas grow bigger as more and more people leave the countryside to live in towns and cities.

MEDCs stands for More Economically Developed Countries
LEDCs stands for Less Economically Developed Countries
3. Where did rapid urbanization take place prior to 1950 ? Why ?
Prior to 1950 , rapid urbanization took place in Europe and North America because industrialisation occured in those areas.
4. What happened after 1950 ?
After 1950 , urbanisation started to grow rapidly in LEDCs.
