The nuclear family
The nuclear family consists of the father, the mother , and the chilren.

2. Extended family
 consists of the grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces,and in-laws,(relatives through marriage).


DISCUSSION
1) In your opinion about that
“In the United States Nuclear family generally live in homes without members of extended family.”
2) Who lives in the typical family home in your country?

-the extent of family ties and obligations

Obligations: responsibilities and duties
In the United States, nuclear family usually has its own separate residence and is often ecomomically independent of other family members
-residence: a place where a person resides, house
e.g.
- When couples marry, they are expected to live independently of their parents and become head of households when they have children

e.g.
- It usually for nuclear family members to borrow money from a bank rather than from relatives
In the United states, members of the extended families are not necessarily consulted when making major decisions and have no responsibility to take care of the children in the family
3. SINGLE PARENT FAMILY
-DEFINITION
+ A Family consisting of the children and one parent either the father and the
+ In US, single parent families are popular
+ In Viet Nam , there are more and more the type of single families

4.BLENDED FAMILIES OR STEPFAMILIES

-DEFINITION
- A family in which both parents have been divorced, each with their own children they remarry and bring both sets chilren into the marriage
+ It consists of stepparents, stepsister, stepbrother, halfbrother and half sister

-What problems usually occur in this type of family?
- How do they overcome these problem?

-define your role in raising you children and stepchildren

1. Does the husband/ wife meet the culture shock?

CHILD RAISING
-The way parents bring up and educate their children
-In the United State it is very common for parents to put a newborn in a separate bedroom when the child is a few weeks old.
+ part of the reason is ecomomic
+ Parents like to preserve privacy
+ When the children grow older they will also be able to have privacy
+ This is seen as the first step toward personal independence
-In Viet Nam:
the small children can share bedroom with their parents, it means that they do not have separate rooms

+ In America, parents try to instill the value of individualism and high esteem in their children.At a sertain age, the children are encourage not tobe “ tied to their mothers’apron

-At early age, the children are taught to make decision and to be responsible for their actions
-the children establish the first atep of autonomy by working for money outside home
-In Viet Nam, the children live dependently on their parents untill they are 18 and the have own jobs. In they devote themselves to their children. There is Vietnamese proverb that “ ca chuoi dam duoi vi con”
DISCUSSION
You have see the differences in the way to raise children in Viet Nam and America. Which ways do you prefer?
ADULT CHILDHOOD
Between 18 and 20 years old, children are encouraged to leave the nest
They make their own decision:
+ where they live
+who they get married to
+ what jobs they want
- After marriage they buy their own houses without expecting their parents’ support
DISCUSSION
Why do parents make their children leave their houses as soon as possible?
- begin independent life
2) Why do children accept a father’s offer of a place in his business? Why do they reject it?
- They do not accept because they want to assert their independence
- They accept because they want to get success more easily
THE ELDERLY
Discussion
1.Where do your grandparents live? (with your family or live alone)
2. Who are responsible for taking care of the elderly who are become very sick?
3. What expectations does society have about care for the elderly?

In the United State
Social and familial treatment of the elderly also reflects the values of independence and individualism.
The elderly are financially supported by government_ sponsored, social security and welfare system.
Social security: government system of payment to retired people
It is common that most American families place the elderly who are physical disabilities or illness in nursing homes.

Many people choose to live in retirement community and senior citizen centers
Senior citizen: person over age sixty or sixty five
The disadvantages of this type of living is the separation of generation.




In Vietnam
The elderly often live with their grown children.
Vietnamese government also helps the older people who have no children and are disabled through welfare system.

8. Working wives and husbands

The male was responsible for the financial support
The female was responsible for emotional support
Wives share in providing financial support
Husbands stay home and care for children

. Breadwinner: person who works to support the family
. Day care: care for children when parents are working
.Dual career couples: mother and father both have careers
. Commuter marriages: husbands and wife live in two separate
