Hình thức đảo ngữ thường được dùng để nhấn mạnh khi:
* Đưa trạng từ phủ định hay cụm từ tương đương ra đầu câu: hardly(khó có thể), scarcely(hiếm khi nào), no longer(không còn nữa), never(không bao giờ), never before(trước đây không bao giờ), seldom(ít khi nào), rarely(hiếm khi nào), nowhere(không nơi đâu), not until(mãi cho tới khi), not only. but also(không những.mà còn), no sooner. than(vừa lúc.thì)..
* Đưa only, so, such.ra đầu câu
* Xóa liên từ "if" trong câu điều kiện
I have never seen such a wonderful thing.
Never have I seen such a wonderful thing.
